Wii Play - A Don't Buy

I recently picked up Wii Play for the Nintendo Wii. I was talked in to by the guy behind the counter at GameStop. I needed a second Wii Remote ($40.00), and Wii Play ($50.00) comes with a Wii Remote and few games, so why not spend ten more dollars?

Here's why: Wii Play is terrible. The games aren't fun, and there's no replay value. Wii Play is meant to be a tutorial on how to use the Wii Remote, so if you've already been playing a while, there's no need to play this game. Even if you haven't played at all, the controls are simple to figure out, and most games have there own tutorials built in.

If you find yourself in my position, just get the Wii-mote, and save your $10.00.

It seems like Wii Sports and Wii Play were probably all software demos created at the same time by Nintendo to show folks how to program for the Wii-mote.

It seems they divided them into two groups: Wii Sports is all the demos where you use the Wii-mote in a unique, vaguely real-world way -- whereas Wii Play is all of the ones where you basically just use it as you would any pointer; you could play everything in Wii Play on a PC with a mouse just as well as the Wii-mote.

So, yeah, they aren't as cool as the ones where you actually swing the Wii-mote like a baseball bat or golf club -- that's the stuff we all want to do with the Wii! -- but I still disagree: if you need another Wii-mote, and have friends/family over to play games with, I think it's worth buying the package that comes bundled with Wii Play. We like the Duck Hunt, Air Hockey and Tank games, at least.

So far my favourite Wii game that actually makes proper use of the potential of the Wii-mote is Boom Blox, which is vaguely Jenga-like.

My favourite Wii game that doesn't really employ the Wii-mote well but is still worth getting is Super Mario Galaxy...
